Website Redesign SEO Checklist: 8 Steps to Keep Rankings

You already have a phone number on trucks, invoices, and a Google listing. Someone in Prescott Valley taps a saved link tonight, and the page that used to answer is gone. That is the quiet way a redesign costs calls. The new site can look sharper and still drop the pages that were bringing the work.

Silva Marketing is a Prescott-based digital marketing agency. We work with local service businesses in Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley, and across Northern Arizona that are planning a new website. This website redesign SEO checklist walks through eight steps, in order, to protect the rankings and phone calls a site already earns.

A redesign can improve how a site looks and loads. It often changes the page titles, URLs, and wording search engines rely on, so pages that bring in calls can disappear within days of launch. The steps below cover what to do before the build starts, during development, and after the new site goes live.

Before you approve a homepage mockup, export the pages that already produce calls. A bookmark, an old estimate link, and a directory citation all point at today's URLs. If those addresses change and nothing forwards them, the visitor gets an error instead of your crew. We have launched more than 500 websites, and the launches that hold their leads start with that inventory, not with colors.

Table of Contents

1. Keyword and Search Intent Mapping Before the Redesign Begins

List the phrases customers use, group them by job, and assign each group to one page before design starts. Skip the map and you can publish a handsome site that no longer matches what people type. The calls do not move to the new layout on their own.

Say a Prescott HVAC company finds that "AC repair Prescott" traffic lives on an old blog post. The rebuild should give that intent a real service page, not a slider labeled Our Services. A contractor covering Chino Valley and Dewey-Humboldt needs separate location sections so each town keeps its own terms.

A six-step infographic illustrating a keyword and search intent mapping process for website redesign planning.

What belongs on the map

  • Export URLs with traffic: Save every address that earns visits before you redesign anything.

  • One primary phrase: Pair each strong page with one main term and two or three supporting terms.

  • Phone language: Ask callers how they describe the job, then add those words.

  • A second pass: Check the map after launch so a valuable page was not dropped.

A 2026 field experiment with 1,065 U.S. desktop users and 68,089 searches found that a Google AI Overview reduced organic clicks by 39.8%, while searches ending without a click rose from 54% to 73%, per Conversion Pipeline's summary of that study. A smaller set of accurate, local service pages beats a stack of generic FAQs. Our plain guide to what search intent means is the reference we use when a page's job is still fuzzy.

2. URL Structure and a 301 Redirect Map

A Prescott Valley service provider changes to and redirects the old address to the new page on launch day. Without that pair, a number saved in a customer's phone opens a dead page. Years of links can disappear in a weekend.

Google's Change of Address guidance says to redirect the old homepage and each old canonical page to its new equivalent, and to keep those redirects for at least 180 days, longer if Search still sends people through them. Send a retired page to the closest match. A firm that folds three office pages into one hub should land each old page on that hub, not on a generic home.

Keep the hop short: Redirect straight to the final page. A chain makes both visitors and crawlers wait, and it is easy to break later.
  • Crawl first: Capture every URL with a tool such as Screaming Frog.

  • Leave good paths alone: If an address already ranks and reads clearly, do not rename it for style.

  • Watch errors: Check 404 reports for at least three months after launch.

The VeloCMS guide to migration redirects is a useful platform-switch reference. For naming, see how to create SEO-friendly URLs.

3. Title Tags, Meta Descriptions, and Heading Structure

Title tags and meta descriptions are the lines people read in search results. Headings tell a visitor, and a crawler, what the page is for. Designers often rewrite them for a cleaner look, and the phrases that earned the click disappear.

What should a Prescott service title say

Name the job and the place. A roofing page titled Our Services becomes "Roof Repair in Prescott, AZ | Licensed Local Roofers." A Sedona-area dental practice that keeps a working cosmetic-dentistry description is less likely to watch click-through fall on day one. One H1, aligned with that title, is enough. Repeating the same phrase on every page makes each page less specific.

  • Export the current set: Compare live titles and descriptions with the new drafts before launch.

  • Write for a person first: Then confirm the core service term is still there.

  • Do not stuff: The same town name in every heading does not create local relevance.

If a title was earning calls, do not "freshen" it just because the layout changed.

Clear wording also helps an AI summary say what you do. A homeowner in Prescott deciding between two roofers will click the result that states the job, not the one that says Welcome.

4. Crawlability, Indexing, Robots.txt, Sitemaps, and Canonical Tags

A Prescott contractor's staging site was left on noindex, and launch had to wait until production was open to crawlers. A page Google cannot fetch cannot show up for a local search or an AI answer. That setting is easy to miss because the site looks finished in a browser.

Google's site-move documentation calls for a URL map, server-side permanent redirects such as 301 or 308, a new sitemap in Search Console, and traffic checks on both versions. A sitemap that still lists retired URLs asks Google to crawl pages you just removed.

What to verify before you flip the switch

  • Robots rules: Check robots.txt and meta robots on staging and on production. Our short explainer of what a robots.txt file does is the checklist we hand a developer.

  • Canonicals: A Prescott Valley clinic should point parameter URLs at the clean service page.

  • Inspection: Use URL Inspection on the money pages the day you go live.

  • Sitemap hygiene: Drop retired addresses so crawlers spend time on current pages.

Record Search Console impressions, clicks, and crawl errors before launch. Otherwise a normal week looks like a disaster, or a real loss looks like noise.

5. Core Web Vitals and Page Speed

Treat speed as a release test, not a nice extra. Google recommends Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint below 200 milliseconds, and Cumulative Layout Shift below 0.1, as Core Web Vitals guidance states. Those numbers describe loading, responsiveness, and whether the page jumps while someone tries to tap Call.

A slow phone page is what you lose when this step is skipped. Many Northern Arizona customers search from a truck or a job site. A modern layout that stalls never gets the chance to convert.

The loading bar on a real template is a better test than a homepage screenshot.

Benchmark the same URL groups in Search Console before and after launch, and trust field data over a single lab score. A Chino Valley restaurant that swaps oversized photos for compressed WebP files usually moves LCP more than a font tweak does. A Prescott law office that removes an unused chat widget often steadies the contact page.

Where the time actually goes

  • Size images to the slot: Do not upload a full-resolution file and hope the theme shrinks it.

  • Cut unused scripts: Each tag for chat, ads, or call tracking should earn its place. Teams that reduce JavaScript overhead before launch have fewer surprises.

  • Reserve space: Give images and embeds a height so text does not jump.

  • Retest after tags: Analytics and call tracking change the score. Our notes on Core Web Vitals optimization walk through the checks we rerun.

If you want the metric names in one short walkthrough, this overview is enough to brief a developer.

6. Mobile-First and Accessible Design

Google indexes the mobile version. A desktop mockup that looks finished does not prove the phone version will. For a plumber in Prescott Valley, the call often starts in a parking lot. If the number sits below a huge hero, you lose that tap.

HTTP Archive's 2025 Web Almanac reported that only 48% of mobile websites had a good Core Web Vitals assessment, compared with 56% on desktop. A passing desktop score is not evidence the phone is fine. Test service pages, contact forms, menus, and image-heavy sections on real phones.

What a thumb should reach

  • A sticky call button: A Prescott Valley plumber who keeps the number visible while the visitor scrolls removes a reason to bounce.

  • A short menu: A Dewey-Humboldt bookkeeping firm that puts Contact one tap away beats a nested drawer.

  • Visible content: Do not hide the service explanation inside collapsed tabs on mobile.

  • Contrast and focus: Check color contrast and keyboard paths during design review, not after complaints.

Readable type, large tap targets, and a contact form on every key template also make the site easier for more customers. That is practical access, not a separate project you bolt on later.

7. Local SEO Signals, NAP, Google Business Profile, Schema, and Service Area Pages

Local results lean on whether your profile matches the search, how close you are, and how well known you are. Google's local ranking explanation describes those as relevance, distance, and prominence. Prominence includes information across the web, links, directories, and review quantity and scores. A redesign cannot erase distance. It can stop you from looking like two different businesses.

The loss, when this step is skipped, is a Google Business Profile that no longer matches the website. A Prescott electrician who updates the footer phone before launch, so it matches the profile exactly, avoids that split. Name, address, and phone should agree on the site, the profile, and the directories you already use.

Service area pages that are actually different

A Prescott Valley pool company should not clone one page and swap the town name for Chino Valley or Dewey-Humboldt. Each page needs its own projects, drive-time reality, and service notes.

  • Compare NAP before launch: Footer, contact page, schema, and the Business Profile.

  • Use LocalBusiness schema: List the services and areas you truly cover.

  • Feed the profile: New photos, services, and posts should match the new site.

  • Stay consistent: The same hours and phone everywhere beat a clever tagline in one footer.

We design and maintain sites for businesses in Prescott, Prescott Valley, and Chino Valley, and the same consistency standard applies across the rest of Northern Arizona.

8. Post-Launch Monitoring in Search Console, Analytics, and Rank Tracking

Launch day is not the finish. The first weeks show crawl errors, broken forms, and call-volume changes that a pretty homepage will not reveal. A Prescott home-services company that sees a 404 spike within a week can add the missing redirects while the old links still matter. Wait a quarter, and those visitors have already called someone else.

HTTP Archive's 2025 SEO chapter found that 74% of pages had good LCP, 72% had good CLS, and 97% had good INP, yet only 56% had good overall Core Web Vitals. Passing one metric, or watching only the homepage, hides a weak service page. Record page weight and field scores by template before launch, then compare. The same dataset put the median homepage near 2.9 MB on desktop and 2.6 MB on mobile.

A calm review rhythm

  • Connect tools on day one: Search Console and analytics should be live with the new site, not "next week."

  • Weekly, then monthly: Review errors every week for the first month.

  • Count calls: A Chino Valley contractor who tracks calls from new service pages can fix headlines that visits alone will not explain.

  • Use the baseline: Compare against the export you saved during keyword mapping.

A rank tracker API can sit beside Search Console if you want query movement without living in spreadsheets. Each month we send clients a performance dashboard, a next-step roadmap, and clear KPIs, so the review stays specific.

Launch With Confidence, Then Keep Measuring

Eight steps protect one outcome. Search engines can still find the pages that earn calls, and a customer on a phone in Prescott or Prescott Valley can still reach you. Start with the keyword map and the redirect plan before colors are locked. Use the weeks after launch to catch the URL, the form, or the tag that slipped through.

What you skip is what you lose. No map, and a beautiful page no longer answers the search that paid for last month's jobs. No redirects, and a saved number opens an error. Rewritten titles, and the result that used to get the click looks vague. A blocked robots file, and the new site is invisible. Slow templates, and the person on a job site gives up. A mismatched phone number, and your Google Business Profile and your website disagree about who you are.

You do not need a new domain for a redesign. Keep URLs that already work. Change a path only when the structure is clearer, then forward the old one. Expect some movement while Google recrawls. A cliff in calls, a pile of 404s, or a service page that will not index is a fix, not a branding problem.
